Balancing Compliance and Support:

The Department of Developmental Disabilities is tasked with the dual responsibility of ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations while delivering high-quality support services. Compliance measures are in place to uphold the rights and dignity of individuals with developmental disabilities, safeguard their well-being, and maintain the integrity of the programs and services provided.

During the pandemic many rules were relaxed but with services going back into full swing DODD is now focusing on compliance, even though

  1. Quality Assurance: Compliance measures within the Ohio DODD are designed to maintain high standards of care and support. This includes regular assessments and evaluations to ensure that service providers meet the required benchmarks for quality. Monitoring and audits help identify areas for improvement and guarantee that individuals receive the best possible assistance.
  2. Legal and Ethical Standards: Compliance extends to legal and ethical standards, ensuring that the rights of individuals with developmental disabilities are protected. The Ohio DODD follows federal laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, as well as state regulations, to provide a legal framework that governs the provision of services.
  3. Individualized Planning: While compliance measures guide the department's activities, they are also incorporated into individualized planning for each person served. This ensures that support services are tailored to meet the unique needs and preferences of individuals, while still adhering to regulatory requirements.
  4. Person-Centered Approach: Compliance within the Ohio DODD aligns with the person-centered approach, which emphasizes the individual's choices, desires, and aspirations. The department strives to strike a balance between regulatory compliance and empowering individuals to make decisions about their own lives.
  5. Continuous Improvement: Compliance is not just a static set of rules but an ongoing commitment to improvement. The Ohio DODD engages in continuous self-assessment and seeks feedback from stakeholders to enhance its programs and services continually. This ensures that compliance is not just a checkbox but a living, evolving process that responds to the changing needs of the community.
